Locating Hikes, Hike Schedules and More Information You are invited to navigate the pages of this website when planning to join a scheduled hike. Rules have been put into place so everyone stays safe during an organized hike and no one is left behind. A Trail Hike Rating System, included on this page, will serve as a guide in rating the distance, level of difficulty and elevation of the planned hiking locations. Use this as a guideline in deciding if the hike is within your ability level. Everyone is responsible for their own health and fitness level on each hiking trip.
Hikers, you must always contact the Trail Coordinator to register with them before coming on a hike!
Complete information regarding Hiking Protocals, Rules and Regulations, Trail Ratings, Map Links, Directions, Hiking Schedules and Hiking Forms are available on this website. Please check carefully, as you visit each page, so you know what to expect once you register to participate in an organized Bear Creek Club hike. The monthly calendar of scheduled hikes, on this page, gives you more detailed information about each hike or event. Just click on the dates each month to navigate the calendar for details in locating hikes and hike schedules. Map Quest also appears on the page to help you with directions to the meeting place for that days hike. Hike participants must always contact the Trail Coordinator for each hike prior to the day of the scheduled hike. Their contact information is listed on the calendar and you must register with them before every hike. Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before the scheduled hiking time. Hiking with the club is at your own risk! Guests are welcome to participate. Everyone must remain safe and follow the Trail Coordinator's instructions. Never leave the group to hike on your own.

Hiking Trail Rating Scale Below is a chart using a rating scale in evaluating which hikes are best suited for your level of capability. We rate each hike by a letter and description system and want you to use these guidelines. As you can see, the letter assigned to each hike allows you to view the hike's level of difficulty. You pick the hikes you like and want to participate in during each month. Each hiking participant is responsible for their own health and fitness level. Do not select a hike that will be too strenuous or too high an elevation for your fitness level. Hiking books, park web sites and experienced hikers knowledge of a trail are all used when assigning a rating to a particular trail for participants consideration.
Hiking Trail Rating Scale: Degree of Difficulty, Ratings: E: Easy - Short hike, little change in elevation gain. M: Moderate - 4 to 6 mile hike, up to 1000 elevation gain S: Strenuous - 6 miles or more, over 1000 elevation gain
Please call the Trail Coordinator of the hike you are considering prior to the hiking date for more information in determining hiking trail levels of difficulty.

About Our Hikes On all hiking trips, bring a snack & beverage and, if it is sunny and warm, bring sunscreen, sunglasses & bug spray. You may bring a walking stick, which is a remarkable aid on the trail. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring rain gear. No pets, please. Hike Coordinators frequently select NC State Parks, National Forests, Living History Farms, Nature Preserves and some Urban Trails, as well. Some of our hikes are Walking Tours in Historical Places and Landmarks. Groups will wait no longer that 5 minutes beyond the set meeting time. Those car-pooling are asked to pay the driver $1.50 for every 30 minutes of travel time. Weather may cause unexpected changes to scheduled hikes after they are publicized. Bear Creek Hiking Club hikes rain or shine, year round. Remember, hiking with the club, is at your own risk! You must always call and register with the Trail Coordinator prior to the date of the hiking trip.
